#42: Olympic Day Festivities Bring Maltese Athletes Together For Some Running… And Sparring

The International Olympic Day comes once a year on the 23rd of June. And what better way to celebrate it than by a national day of sports?

Malta Taekwondo Association athletes joined the National Lottery MOC Olympic Day 2024 event, a multi-sport event that saw a series of children’s test matches hit the University of Malta campus.

Taekwondo was displayed together with several other sports, including Karate, Judo, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Football, and Curling.

The sparring bouts were part of the kids’ monthly test matches; an initiative organized by the MTA to expose Maltese athletes to the Point Scoring System (PSS).

The event didn’t begin and end with the display of various sports. Before our athletes hit the mat, they were invited for a joint fun run around the University of Malta Campus.

At the run, MTA athletes were represented by the Iron Taekwondo League, which fielded a team of 23 persons; taekwondo athletes (as young as six years), parents, and coaches.

Younger athletes ran a 1 km around the University ring road, while older athletes did several laps around the same track to clock a 5 km distance.

MTA fielded one of the biggest teams on the day, making it a pleasant experience all round. For the athletes, it was also a great opportunity to celebrate all sports.

The Association would like to thank the Maltese Olympic Committee for this initiative, not to mention its continuous support and hard work, of which are invaluable.
